Paul Baffes, Ph.D.
Paul Baffes, Ph.D. has more than ten years experience in all
phases of corporate innovation. Currently, he is Manager of Innovation Projects
for IBM’s Extreme Blue Program, where he is responsible for selecting
innovation projects that could have maximum value for IBM. His previous experience
spans the entire innovation process including research, invention, development,
founding a company, fundraising, marketing, and sales. He founded and acted
as CEO of his own eLearning company and was founder or Board member of three
other startup companies.
Dr. Baffes recently served on the U.S. National Innovation Initiative a nationwide
effort to make innovation policy recommendations to the U.S. President. He has
received numerous awards, including being named NASA Inventor-of-the Year in
1995; Best Paper Award, National Conference on Artificial Intelligence, August
1996; and three NASA Space Act Awards for significant contributions to space
exploration. He holds eight patents (issued or pending), and has been recognized
internationally for his research in artificial intelligence. Dr. Baffes served
as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the
University of Texas at Austin and has taught in many industry classes and workshops.
Dr. Baffes received a Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Sciences at the University
of Texas at Austin in 1994, and an M.S. from the Department of Computer Sciences
at the University of Texas at Austin, in 1993. He received his bachelor’s
degree in Computer Science Engineering from Harvard University in 1984.
